About Us

The Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) of Frederick County strengthens the spirit of women though cycles of donations and grants. We strive to empower women to become stronger and self-sufficient in order to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of the people for whom they are responsible. The idea behind it is pretty simple….raise funds to help alleviate some of the struggles and obstacles that women and children face during difficult times in their lives.

Since our founding on July 1, 2006, we have awarded over $1,100,000 to more than 30 Frederick County organizations to aid women in need, including $150,000 that was awarded in 2016. We also have established a large endowment fund that currently exceeds $650,000 and will continue to grow. All funds are held at The Community Foundation until grants are awarded.

Each February we open a new grant cycle to which area non-profits submit applications. The Grants Committee reviews all applications to ensure they meet the WGC criteria and recommends the distribution of grant monies for the projects and organizations most in need. The recommendations are submitted to the general membership for voting and then to The Community Foundation for final approval. WGC invites representatives from the approved grantees to the Annual Tea in June where we make the formal presentations.

Giving back starts with an idea and gains momentum with enthusiastic member participation. Together we make a much bigger impact to organizations that handle ‘at risk’ situations. Our members share the understanding that encouragement and financial assistance are compelling factors in restoring stability and hope. It is rewarding to see the difference a much-needed program can make in a woman’s life, often bridging the gap between success or failure. This is the core mission that drives our group, and it makes an immediate as well as future impact on our community.

It is heartwarming to be involved in The Women’s Giving Circle of Frederick County and to see the impact we have made on our community. Founder Karlys Kline says “I can think of no better way to serve the community than to help women and their children begin to lead better lives. Let’s continue to change our world…one woman at a time.”

Giving Circles have been very successful across the United States using varying formats and guidelines. We owe many thanks to Buffy Beaudoin-Schwartz of The Baltimore Area Grant Makers and Betsy Day of The Community Foundation of Frederick for sharing their expertise and knowledge and helping us to establish the basis for our organization.

The Women’s Giving Circle has a diverse membership of 220 people with a shared vision, and the membership continues to grow. There are four levels of membership from which to choose with a minimum pledge of $1,000 a year for three consecutive years.  Members have many payment options including monthly, quarterly, annual and one-time payments using credit cards, checks, stock, and other means.

We hold luncheons in the Spring and Fall and an Annual Tea in June. We encourage potential members to join us at one or more of our events to experience the excitement of our group.
